Volunteering with the Volunteer Centre
The Volunteer Centre works with local groups developing opportunities to volunteer. It is one way for local community groups to access Basingstoke Voluntary Services' resources. At the Volunteer Centre we also 'match' potential volunteers with several opportunities.
Volunteers come from all sorts of backgrounds and lifestyles. They can be: unemployed or employed, millionaires, people of faith, people from all cultural backgrounds, people with physical or mental disabilities, even people who have never volunteered before. Anybody can be a volunteer.
How can the Volunteer Centre help my Organisation?
The Volunteer Centre is like a "Dating Agency?" matching up prospective volunteers with appropriate opportunities so that everyone benefits based on their interests, skills and the sort of activity they are interested in
How can I attract Volunteers?
If you need volunteers, there are several easy ways of advertising for such. You can advertise with us, the Volunteer Centre, on www.do-it.org.uk Make sure you define the role for the volunteer, think of a catchy and accurate title, explain your mission statement and most importantly, sell the role!
What do you want from your volunteers?
- Skills
- Commitment
- Reliability
- Honesty
- Enthusiasm
- Understanding of policy
- Feedback
What are volunteers looking for?
- To improve their chances of employment
- To enhance their existing skills
- To improve language skills
- To make a difference
- To gain new skills and experiences
- To enrich their lives
- To make new friends and have fun!
How does it work?
The Volunteer Centre advertises roles and works with volunteers to help them find suitable roles. Volunteers apply via an interview or through the website. The Volunteer Centre can also forward details to organisations and also to other volunteers. Organisations often respond quickly after this, then we carry out an interview with an application and CRB check all new volunteers.
What happens after?
Once you become a volunteer you have an induction and after that you can start training. You will be supervised throughout the course and we give feedback to help you along the way. The Volunteer Centre in Brighton and Hove have produced a Volunteering Good Practice Guide that you might find useful
